Asian Freestyle Football Championship with Maharlika Sports

The homegrown sports organization Maharlika Sports Development Institute Inc. organized the first Asian Freestyle Football Championship in Davao City from December 8-10 at SM Lanang Premier. This was established with two of the organizers, themselves famous Freestyle Football players, Steve Elias of Toronto, Canada and Nguyen Hoai Nam of Vietnam, general secretary of the Asian Freestyle Football Federation. Steve and Nam, who went from being participants in competitions throughout Europe, to becoming judges and finally organizers, said that they decided to bring the sport to the Philippines because they want to make it known all over Asia, aiming to expose more young athletes to this recentathletic activity.

31 participants from 15 countries showcased their skills during the event, which is governed by the World Freestyle Football Federation and organized by Maharlika Sports. Filipino-Norwegian Phillip Warren Gertsson captured his second freestyle football crown in this 4th edition of the Asian Freestyle Football Championships. The 25-year old Gertsson beat Katsuyama of Japan in the final battle. Katsuyama showed some amazing tricks but Gertsson was smooth and near to perfect in his tricks’ transition.

Before the competition’s hype took over, the freestylers first enjoyed their stay in Davao City with a great island hopping tour on December 3 and 8. Hager Travel and Tours made sure that the organizers, judges and competitors cherished and relaxed first before the competition. On December 3, the first group to experience said island hopping tour were the organizers headed by Steve and Nam. “It was all great! We enjoyed the Bat Cave experience the most,” Nam said. According to Steve, Hager Travel and Tours is definitely their recommended traveling agency now since they were well taken care of from the hotel transfers to the exclusive island hopping arrangement they were able relish. The second group’s island hopping was held on December 8, this time with the athletes who stated that their favorite part was the snorkeling at the Angel’s Cove in Samal.
